Proverbs 1:10 could well be the motto for drug-free teens everywhere.
“My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.”
It sounds simple because it is simple. But just because something is simple does not mean it’s easy.
Last year my washer quit spinning. Well, if the tub doesn’t spin the clothes don’t get wrung out. So, we decided to try to fix it. We did some research on the repair it would take and decided to take a stab at it.
After some profanity and a call to my Dad to come save the day, the motor burned up.
Simple but not easy.
The text of Proverbs 1:10 adds another stumbling block to doing the right thing – peer pressure. When you’re young, and you really want to fit in, you’re tempted to do things to earn the approval you crave.
Peer pressure can blind you if you crave the wrong things. If it’s approval you’re after, you’ll compromise to get it. If you find your approval in Christ, then the approval of others won’t make or break you. Then it will be easier to do the simple thing – to say no to sinful suggestions.
You can do it when you know God loves you, no matter what.
